The selected picture is loaded to a computer and fed to a special printer that prints on rice paper or frost sheets using food colors. Prepared cookies are individually wrapped in cellophane paper for safekeeping of the print. These may be further decorated with ribbon ties and encased in a bakery box.

First, choose only 100% sized high resolution pictures (200 pixels and above) and frost sheets for best print quality. Small messages can also be printed on cookies in addition to family photos. Businesses may choose to have their company name and logo printed on cookies for clients.

Bakers usually make photo cookies by dozen. The rates begin at around $20 a dozen and can cross the $50 mark, depending on the quality of the materials used. Most bakers require photo cookie orders to be placed at least a week in advance.
